On Friday, President Joe Biden compared the threats posed by Hitler to Europe in the 1940s to the threats facing the world today by dictators . He also said, “The Army Rangers who fought that day would want Americans to defend freedom.” ( Reuters, John Mason, June 8, 2024). President Biden is a gold star family member who lost his son Beau to brain cancer caused by burn pit fumes while serving in Afghanistan. Biden genuinely reveres all American veterans, living and dead, and refers to them as heroes and patriots.
President Biden appeared with President Zelensky at the ceremonies to highlight the efforts Ukraine is making to protect both his country and all of Europe from Vladimir Putin’s effort to invade sovereign countries. Biden made clear what Putin is doing in Ukraine mirrors what Hitler was doing in the 1940s in Europe. Putin, Donald Trump’s ideological mentor, is hoping for a Trump win so America will stop giving support to Ukraine and will take a non-existent role in fighting to defend democracies around the world.
President Zelensky embraced a 98 yr-old D- Day veteran and thanked him for fighting all those years ago to protect Europe. The veteran touched Zelenshy’s arm and said, ” Thank you for protecting Europe.” The isolationist ideology of Donald Trump and American embarrassments like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene share none of those sentiments about saving democracies. Additionally, President Biden apologized to Zelensky for the delay in getting aid to his country. He also promised that America will never walk away from helping Ukraine keep their democracy.
When compared to each other’s show of respect for veterans who served and died protecting our democracy, President Joe Biden wins. Biden has shown compassion and respect for veterans, and Donald Trump has demonstrated more unrivaled disrespect for them than any former US President. Trump uses gimmicks and photo ops to sound like he cares about and admires veterans. He hugs the flag, uses the military as a visual prop to make himself look strong, and threatens to use the military to assault peaceful protesters unconstitutionally. He is a former draft dodger who claimed bone spurs made him ineligible to serve. However, many veterans have publicly said they had bone spurs and didn’t use them as an excuse to avoid service.

By worshipping a man who disrespects war heroes, dead and alive, they are demonstrating ignorance about what authentic democracy means.
