These are the eight plots Trump pursued:
- Filed lawsuits opposing the election results
- Tried to install fake electors
- Contact state officials to overturn votes
December and January 2020
- Appealed to Congress to overturn the votes
- Pressured Pence to not to certify the electoral count
- Asked The Department of Justice to interfere in the voting process
- Considered using the military to seize the voting machines
- Sabotage the process of Congress certifying the vote by inciting the mob to stop the vote
When each plot failed, Trump, his attorneys and allies put into play the next attempt to overturn the election. The lawsuits declared rampant fraud occurred but Trump”s legal team presented no evidence. The claims were thrown out of court and within 1 month that part of the coup attempt was over. Next in play was the fake elector scheme encouraged by Trump Cabinet member Rick Perry. The scheme involved getting Trump supporters to pose as electors in swing states where Trump lost. This process was occurring between the date of the election results and the date of the certification of the electoral college results. Trump and his allies announced to the public that an alternate slate of electors existed and these votes would be submitted to Congress and declare Trump the winner. The plot was ridiculous, obviously illegal and failed. This plot is under investigation by the special counsel.
Next was pressuring states to declare election fraud which resulted in the election being stolen from Trump. State after state defended the legitimacy of the execution of election protocol and law. The most blatant example of Trump’s attempt to steal the election was his call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Rathensberger to “find me 11,780,000 votes which is one more than i need to win.” Melber informs in his summary, “getting politicians to overthrow the vote is the definition of a coup.” The next assault on the election was to ask state legislatures to throw out the Biden votes and award them to Trump. Trump personally pressured state officials in Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan to claim election fraud in their states. Although many Trump allies and attorneys have ended up in jail or are under criminal investigation to do his illegal bidding. Thankfully these states remained loyal to the Constitution.
A desperate Trump went to his military plot to seize voting machines and delegitimize the voter results. His team of crooket allies and attorneys were: Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, and General Michael Flynn. As it turns out even the corrupt Giuliani told Trump they would all end up in prison if he ordered the military to commit an illegal act. Once that plan was dead, Trump had one desperate move left: Summon his rabid, white nationalist, anarchist, MAGA mob to go the Capitol on January 6th, the day that the electoral college vote would be counted and his re-election loss would be final. Each stage of Trump’s coup plot clearly had one goal: to steal the election and be reinstated as president despite not being elected by the American people. The gaslighting strategy was used to confuse and incite the insurrectionists. While Trump tried to steal the election from the day he lost in November, he referred to the legitimate win by Biden “the steal”
On January 6th, while police were beaten and the Capitol was physically defiled by white nationalist militia groups Trump watched the insurrection on tv at the White House. At his speech at the ellipse, he called on Mike Pence to “do the right thing” and return the electoral votes to the states and not certify Biden’s win. He riled up the armed crowd and promised to march with them to “stop the steal. The rioters called out to |hang Mike Pence and Speaker Nancy Pelosi was targeted to be attacked if she was found. Trump is under investigation for his part in all of the eight plots to steal America’s democracy and join the club of his dictator role models, Putin, Xi Xi Ping and Kim Jong Un.
Ari Melber has outline what happened between November 7th and the day of the insurrection. A first year law student would be able to argue the case to indict and convict Trump for his crimes against the government. However, is the soft spoken Attorney General Merrick Garland strong enough to defend our Constitution? Let’s hope Special Counsel Jack Smith is, because Melber has explained what happened and it’s time for Trump and his entire ring of accomplices to be tried for their crimes.
