President Biden honored 12 Americans today with the President’s Citizens Award for their successful effort in defending the Capitol during the Jan. 6th insurrection. Biden continues to model how presidents acts when they respect democracy and people of high moral commitment to public service. On the two- year anniversary of the insurrection, democrats honored the day by showing gratitude, empathy, and a resolve to fight against the people and ideologies that threaten the stability of America’s democracy. In contrast, Republicans chose to ignore the day in the support of the anti-democracy “big lie” and the disgraced Donald Trump.
The chaotic resistance to elect McCarthy to be Speaker of the House by MAGA House representatives revealed the divisive extremism and corruption that now embody the House chamber. McCarthy was forced to humiliate himself by making deals with the MAGA extremists and begging for votes. Political pundits speculate that McCarthy has made concessions to MAGA members that weakened the role of the Speaker and will increase chaos as the House attempts to work to get things done for the American people.
Despite Trump’s growing irrelevance, the poisonous opposition towards American democracy has already metastisized with the Republican party. This fact was on full display this week. Tearing down our government institutions is the goal of the GOP . They gaslight their base by using democratic phrases such as, ” we are the greatest democracy in the world” and ” I love our Constitution,” while their actions align with insurrectionists.
“House Democrats,” he said, “will always put American values over autocracy, benevolence over bigotry, the Constitution over the cult, democracy over demagogues, economic opportunity over extremism, freedom over fascism, governing over gaslighting, hopefulness over hatred, inclusion over isolation, justice over judicial overreach, knowledge over kangaroo courts, liberty over limitation, maturity over Mar-a-Lago, normalcy over negativity, opportunity over obstruction, people over politics, quality of life issues over QAnon, reason over racism, substance over slander, triumph over tyranny, understanding over ugliness, voting rights over voter suppression, working families over the well-connected, xenial over xenophobia.”
In comparison, Speaker McCarthy’s speech was generic, more ass-kissing to Trump, full of generic “love America” platitudes and generalities on the level of a middle school essay. Not a policy was mentioned except to investigate Biden. To quote the weakest Speaker in US history:
- Our system is built on checks and balances. It’s time for us to be the check and provide some balance to the President’s policies…There is nothing more important than making it possible for American families to live and enjoy the lives they deserve.”
- “Our nation is worth fighting for. Our rights are worth fighting for. Our dreams are worth fighting for. Our future is worth fighting for.”
Hakeem Jeffries showed McCarthy with a speech that identified what was wrong with where McCarthy and the MAGA party wanted to take America. The party is dying, Trump is pathetic has been, and thankfully democrats have their focus on protecting America.
