Take a good look at Jacob Chansely, the QAnon Shaman who broke into the Capitol, lumbered through the House chamber carrying a spear with an American flag on it, sat in the Speakers chair and left a warning note to Mike Pence that ” justice was coming.” Chansley, who suffers from the mental diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder, showed remorse at his sentencing today and took full responsibility for breaking the law. In the past, he has explained that he went to the Capitol because Donald Trump summoned him and others to find the traitors and stop the takeover of our country. He had asked Trump to grant him a pardon, but that request went unmet.
Members of the House who are QAnon believers such as Marjorie Taylor Green and Paul Gosar have been censured for behaviors unbecoming of members of Congress. QAnon is a fringe, alt-right group whose members share beliefs with people who have schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. What is wrong with Americans who vote for candidates who believe in bizarre theories that indicate abnormal thinking? Has America become so polarized that people would rather vote for mentally incompetent people instead of crossing party lines? The demonization of anything or anyone that is not for Trump and his MAGA agenda is dangerous to the safety of many. Republicans have normalized violence towards anyone that opposes Trump. The GOP has become a domestic terror movement that threatens the survival of our democracy by replacing govermental norms and the rule of law with conspiracy theories.
In an article on Sept. 3 by Kevin Roose, the New York Times summarized QAnon as a “set of internet conspiracy theories that allege, falsely, that the world is run by a cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles.” Per Roose, “QAnon followers believe that this cabal includes top Democrats like President Joseph R. Biden Jr., Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Soros, as well as a number of entertainers and Hollywood celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres and religious figures including Pope Francis and the Dalai Lama. Many of them also believe that, in addition to molesting children, members of this group kill and eat their victims to extract a life-extending chemical called adrenochrome.” Anyone who doesn’t think these statements are crazy, is crazy.
QAnon believers have started to infiltrate Congress, winning seats in far-right districts with people who are seduced by alt- right messenging to overlook the mentally-ill thinking of these wacky candidates because they support 2nd Amendment rights and anti-abortion legislation. Anyone who believes in QAnon conspiracy theories has no place in the Congress of the United States. Voting these character-flawed or mentally- compromised people into office puts the rule of law as described in the Constitution at serious risk of being destroyed. Psychotic thinking will lead to an unstable and violent government that will cause great suffering to all Americans.
The Republican party is now the party of QAnon, promoting violence, conspiracy theories, hypocrisy, loyalty to Donald Trump, white supremacy, voter suppression, and authoritarianism. Their leaders are MAGA, QAnon extremists who act aggressively towards colleagues, defy the rules and norms of the House and Senate, and defend the rioters who tried to steal the legitimate, democratic election of Joe Biden for president by attempting to attack members of Congress during the certification process. Known now to be enemies of law enforcement, the Republican party has shown no support or compassion for the Capitol or DC police who protected them during the insurrection. Instead, they are defending the Trump rioters, like Chansey, calling them patriots and mocking the trauma that officers like Michael Fanone are still suffering almost a year after the attack. Fanone is a DC officer who suffered a heart attack and brain injury while being attacked at the insurrection by Trump ” patriots.”.
Minority leader Kevin McCarthy is a toxic opportunist whose first act as Speaker would be to reinstate QAnon loyalists Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar to the committees they were rightfully removed from. Hopefully, the Jan. 6th committee will nail him for something so he will no longer pollute the House with his corrupt opportunism.
