What are Republicans afraid of discovering about the causes and the players involved in the incitement, funding, and personal participation in the 2020 Trump mob attack on the capitol? Senator Mitch McConnell and Rep. Kevin McCarthy have not repeated their full-throated accusations of Trump”s responsibility in inciting the insurrection since days after the insurrection. Video footage of the Capitol break-in, personal accountings of the beatings suffered by the Capitol and DC police, audio proof of rioters looking to harm VP Mike Pence, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi are evidence of what Trump ( and some of his surrogates) incited.

McConnell and McCarthy were obviously shaken by being violently hunted down by rioters and disgusted that Trump wanted this public uprising against our democracy to occur. During the initial shock after the attack, they accurately accused Trump of being responsible for inciting the mob with the lie that Democrats stole the election from him and them. However, when these traitorous members of Congress realized the ” big lie” was Trump’s 2022 mid-term playbook and was here to stay, they abandoned their support of the Constitution, became indifferent to the suffering the police had endured that day and became shameless, pathological liars.
McConnell’s excuse for voting to oppose a bipartisan committee to investigate the insurrection is that the FBI and DOJ are already investigating it and arresting those who participated in the attack on the Capitol. However, a bipartisan congressional committee investigation will go further by looking into what led up to the attack and whether or not members of Congress were involved in funding, organizing or encouraging the rioters. The goal of the committee is to understand all the components that allowed the insurrection to occur and how to prevent it from ever happening again.
The committee has subpoena power and Chairman Bennie Thompson has said the committee will follow the facts and call any witness, including Trump, to testify about what they knew about the insurrection prior to Jan. 6th. Members of Congress have created suspicion by their behavior of possible collusion or prior awareness of the planned insurrection attack at the Capitol. Rep. Josh Hawley was photographed with a raised fist of support to the mob, and undisclosed members of Congress were seen giving private tours the day before the attack.
CNN Politics has reported the investigation is underway into possible contact between the rioters and members of Congress and say, “The data gathered so far includes indications of contact with lawmakers in the days around January 6, as well as communications between alleged rioters discussing their associations with members of Congress, the official said.”
Republicans are avoiding any discussion about the insurrection including Trump’s role in it. Are they covering up a corrupt collusion committed by their colleagues or simply telling lies they believe will return them to the majority. The party has become a threat to democracy and morally bankrupt. The 2022 electorate getting ready to save America by voting as many Republicans out of office as possible.
