Just prior to the Jan. 6th insurrection at the Capitol, Bannon stated that “all hell is going to break loose tomorrow. “. Bannon took to his podcast to encite Trump supporting listeners to stop the certification of Joe Biden as the next president. A staunch leader of the alt-right movement who’s goal is to deconstruct the norms and rule of law of the U.S. government, Bannon long had his eye on grooming Trump for the presidency. Trump, a former Democrat and friend to the Clintons, has never been known to be a committed ideologue. Bannon and extremist groups such as the alt-right, and the Freedom Caucus/ Evangelical wing of the Republican party accurately saw Trump as a power-hungry political figure they could use to violate the Constitution to promote a white identity America, limit rights for women and minorities, stack the Supreme Court with ultra- conservative judges, and transform the American democracy into an autocratic, one-party system. They failed so far, however they are still trying by spreading the ” big lie” and enacting voter suppression laws throughout red states to accomplish a takedown of democracy.
The bipartisan Jan. 6th committee is proceeding with patriotic concern for democracy by pursuing their investigation and issuing subpoenas to Trump inner circle loyalists who, along with the former president, have branded the Capitol attack as a patriotic act, not an insurrection that could have ended the sanctity of our democratic elections. The committee may soon file criminal charges against former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows for refusing to testify. Anyone who has seen the Godfather or any other mafia film considers the similarities between how Trump operates like a mob boss. He lies, threatens people if they don’t lie for him, and breaks laws to retain power and make money. Americans should be held accountable to know what corruption means and how to recognize and reject it when they decide to support a political candidate.
Maybe Trump supporters need a lesson on what the definition of corruption is and how corrupt governments operate.
Corruption is a form of dishonesty or a criminal offense which is undertaken by a person or an organization which is entrusted with a position of authority, in order to acquire illicit benefits or abuse power for one’s personal gain. Wikipedia
Political corruption is the use of powers by government officials or their network contacts for illegitimate private gain. Forms of corruption vary, but can include bribery, lobbying, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, parochialism, patronage, influence peddling, graft, and embezzlement.
People like Bannon and Trump have committed crimes of corruption throughout their time in government. Bannon was indicted for scamming Trump supporters out of $1 million dollars for his personal use. The $25 million that the supporters donated to help construct the Trump’s border wall is where Bannon did his grifting scheme. As president, Trump pardoned Bannon for this crime against MAGA supporters along with pardons for other convicted criminal cronies. Corruption has become normalized by Trump, however the rule of law is catching up with his anti- democracy schemes. Since becoming president 11 associates of Trump have either been arrested, imprisoned, or pleaded guilty for federal crimes. Countless others are now vulnerable, including MAGA members of Congress, for possible criminal acts related to the Jan. 6th insurrection.
It is laughable that Republicans are predicting a guaranteed win in the midterms. With Trump probably getting indicted in either Georgia for illegal election interference, or tax evasion and business fraud in New York, or crimes against the American government for his involvement in the Capitol attack on Congress, the magic of the MAGA dream will probably be as dead as Trump’s chances of escaping becoming a felon and ever being able to hold public office.
