As America withdrew the last of it’s troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban moved in swiftly and overtook the government. After 20 years of fighting along with the Afghans and training them on how to strengthen their ability to defend their government against Taliban rule, Afghanistan surrendered to the Taliban without resistance. The criticism of Biden and the intelligence agencies to better predict the speed of the collapse of the government is plentiful. However, 70% of Americans are behind the ending of the war. The generals are coming out in support of Biden’s decision, saying the original goals of killing Osama Bin-Laden and preventing more terrorist attacks on the United States had been accomplished year’s ago. They agreed with Biden’s assertion that it isn’t America’s goal to be involved in the nation building of other countries.
Biden asserted the 300,000 Afghan military had been well- trained by American troops and supplied with high- level ammunition adequate to defend itself when America withdrew from the country. He said the immediate surrender to the Taliban by the Afghan government indicated that although Afghanistan was militarily prepared to defend itself, it was unwilling to do it. He said America staying longer would never change that reality. The president said the U.S. spent over $1 trillion over the last 20 yrs to help Afghanistan remain free from the rule of the Taliban. However, he promised the American people he would not leave this war for another president to have to deal with. Despite the backlash from Republicans, Democrats and the media, Biden showed he was the man to take the political hit for America’s best interests.
Trump is criticizing Biden’s actions and focusing on his plan that would have maintained the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. His ego wanted a photo op of the U.S. flag flying over a building in that area of the world, however, he overlooked the fact that our ambassadors would have been targets for the Taliban once a full withdrawal had transpired. He naively imagined Americans would be allowed to successfully roam the streets of Kabul getting cooperation by frightened Afghans to gain information about the Taliban.
During his term in office, Trump, along with Secretary Pompeo, and other members of his Administration met with the Taliban without any members from the Afghanistan government present. As we learned over and over again during his term, to feed his ego, Trump engaged with dictators, autocrats, and enemies of the U.S. any chance he could. He even publicly talked about inviting Taliban leaders to Camp David. Thankfully, there were a few sane patriots left in his Administration who talked him out of that crazy, inappropriate idea.
One has to wonder what Trump promised the Taliban in the meeting and if a deal influenced their swift, emboldened takeover of Afghanistan he made with them. The legitimately defeated ex-president is a blamer, whiner, liar, and horrible deal maker. He failed to end the war because his weak ego could not have withstood the criticism. Thankfully, Biden has the strength of character to keep his promises and put America first, instead of gaslighting people with ‘America First’ t-shirts in replacement of taking action.
