During the 2016 Presidential Campaign, the Republican establishment was more disparaging of Trump than the Democrats. His current staunch protectors were among the most outwardly critical voices at the time Trump was pursuing the nomination.
Let’s take a walk down memory lane and listen to these Republicans before they became liars and opportunists:
Former Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, The Business Insider, July 22, 2015
“Let no one be mistaken- Donald Trump’s candidacy is a cancer on conservatism. And it must be clearly diagnosed, excised, and discarded. It cannot be pacified or ignored, for it will destroy a set of principles that has lifted more people out of poverty than any force in the history of the civilized world.”
Perry rejected Trump’s rhetoric about Mexicans, his denigration of John McCain, and called him an arrogant, know nothing. He urged Republicans ” don’t take the poison,” referring to Trump.
Today, Rick Perry agreed with Trump’s declaration that he is the “chosen one.”
Senator Lindsey Graham, CNN Politics, July 21, 2015
Graham referred to Trump as a ” jackass” regarding the disrespectful remarks Trump made about John McCain’s military service.
He also referred to Trump as a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot and a kook.”
After the Access Hollywood tape aired, ‘The State’, October 8, 2016, quoted Graham as saying.”
” I have never been comfortable with Donald Trump being the Republican nominee. The Bill Clinton defense won’t work. We impeached him. I was there.”
Lindsey Graham on Trump today:
He defends Trump on every issue, not with compliments, but agreeing with Trump’s complaint about being unfairly victimized by Democrats.
Mick Mulvaney, at White House in 2018 recounted to colleagues regarding the Access Hollywood tape:
“What he said in the audiotape is disgusting and indefensible. He is not a very good person. My guess is he probably has said even worse.”
He also said, “I don’t particularly like Donald Trump as a person. I will only vote for him because of one reason: Hillary Clinton.”
Today, Mulvaney defends Trump on every issue. In Business Insider, May 2019, when discussing the rise in white supremacist violence, Mulvaney is quoted as saying, “the president is not a white supremacist. He is doing everything he can to keep this kind of thing from happening here.”
Senator Ted Cruz: CNN Politics, May 3rd, 2016
” He is a pathological liar, utterly amoral, a serial philanderer, and a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country has ever seen.” He also said, ” He doesn’t know truth from lies, he accuses everyone of lying. He is the pathological liar.”
Presently, Cruz is an ardent supporter of Trump, recently saying the call to Ukraine President Zelensky “wasn’t that bad.” He recently went on Meet the Press in support of the Trump conspiracy theory that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election.
Insiders report that all of the Republican flip-flops are indicative of the death of the party of Lincoln and the birth of a party that aims to destroy the premise of this nation. Traditional Republicans better grow a spine and fight to take their party back from the takeover of the right-wing extremists and Fox News.
